1. INTRODUCTION

Kia cee´d family expands with three-door pro_cee´d

The World Premiere of the new Kia pro_cee´d three-door hatchback, at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany 11 September in production form, marks the latest expansion of the popular Kia cee´d family.

Longer, lower and lighter than its five-door hatchback sister car, the three-door pro_cee´d brings more style and more sportiness to the C-segment marketplace and is destined to broaden the appeal of the cee´d to a new group of European consumers and achieve thousands of ´conquest´ sales for the Kia brand.

"The new Kia pro_cee´d offers consumers sensationally stylish looks with a truly sporty feel to the driving experience, while also retaining most of the attributes of the popular cee´d five-door hatchback - including excellent practicality and versatility," enthuses Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President Kia Motors Europe.

"With performance, ride and handling that is even more responsive than the five-door, the pro_cee´d will be available with the same wide choice of engines and specifications as its sister car. I think pro_cee´d is truly a great looking car and we know for certain that it will delight existing Kia customers and attract numerous European consumers who find three-door cars particularly attractive and who have not yet considered our brand."

Despite its sporty appearance and lower roofline, the 4.25-metre long pro_cee´d has an unusually long wheelbase and will offer class-leading passenger and luggage space, plus highly competitive levels of equipment and state-of-the-art active and passive safety. Customers in Europe will be able to choose from a line-up of 19 pro_cee´d cars, with three equipment levels (LX, EX and TX), five engines, with manual or automatic transmissions, and an extensive range of optional equipment (depending on individual markets).

Distinctive styling with a cee´d family theme

Thanks to its early conception in the cee´d family creative process, the pro_cee´d has ´stand-alone´ good looks despite a large degree of commonality with other cee´d models, beneath the exterior skin.

"It is a completely resolved design, with only the bonnet and front wings carried over from the five-door, and features unique exterior panels to create its own distinctive style," comments Gregory Guillaume, Kia Motors Europe Chief Designer. "We wanted to make pro_cee´d as ´sporty´ as a cee´d could possibly be, while still remaining a member of our cee´d family."

Because the Kia cee´d family of three models was conceived simultaneously, the new pro_cee´d three-door hatchback has the same in-depth engineering integrity as the five-door hatchback and the wagon. A total of 15 mm longer than the five-door, the pro_cee´d has longer overhangs - by 10 mm at the front and 5 mm at the rear.

Although the pro_cee´d roofline is 30 mm lower than its hatchback sibling, the 2650 mm wheelbase is retained, so the cabin has most of the cee´d´s proven practicality and versatility, with generous legroom and shoulder room. The new roofline and sloping C-pillar design bring about a small reduction in headroom - down 30 mm in front and 40 mm in the rear, but two 1.70-metre adults can sit comfortably in the rear.

Luggage capacity is also generous for this type of vehicle, totalling 340 litres -
loaded up to the bottom of the rear windows and including 55 litres of storage in moulded trays beneath the floor, fitted as standard - just like the hatchback and the Sporty Wagon. The total capacity with the rear seats folded is class-competitive and only slightly down on the five-door cee´d hatchback.

Three models introduce the ´qualitative revolution´

The launch of the Kia cee´d family (five-door hatchback, five-door Sporty Wagon and three-door pro_cee´d) marks a major turning point in Kia´s history. The bringing of this trio to the marketplace is the start of a new era. They are the first-ever Kia cars designed and manufactured in Europe and are already introducing a qualitative revolution for the brand.

The highest standards of engineering and the European-style aesthetics have been applied to every aspect of the cee´d creative process. Such is the quality and durability of cars manufactured at the new purpose-built Kia factory at Zilina in Slovakia, which every cee´d sold in Europe is backed by a 7-Year/150,000 km warranty.


2. STYLING & STRUCTURE

Longer, lower, bolder look for new pro_cee´d

"We wanted to make pro_cee´d as ´sporty´ as a cee´d could possibly be, while still remaining a member of our cee´d family," explains Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Kia Motors Europe. "We are proud that the appearance of the production car remains so close to the concept we showed at the Paris Motor Show last year and only the frameless doors have been dropped.

The three-door, Kia pro_cee´d is such a comprehensive re-working of the cee´d design theme that only the bonnet and the front wing panels are carried over from the five-door. All other exterior panels are new and exclusive to this model. However, like its family siblings, pro_cee´d has a similar ´tough not rough´ appearance, combining strongly solid forms with sensitively flowing lines, jewel-like detailing and a broad stance.

"With the pro_cee´d production car we have communicated sportiness mostly through the car´s exterior design," continues Guillaume. "At the front, we have extended the nose by 10 mm and pulled down the mass by introducing a shallower grille, new-style headlamps, a wider, lower bumper with a prominent lip spoiler, a deeper central air intake that is wider at the bottom than the top and larger fog lights set into elliptical depressions.

"The profile makes pro_cee´d truly distinctive. While the windscreen angle is unchanged, the screen is much shallower and the vehicle height is reduced by 30 mm. The cant rail above the door and side window is deeper. The doors, which are 276 mm longer than the pro_cee´d´s 5-door cousin, have a unique design that highlights the sporty character of this model. The beltline rises much more steeply towards the rear. To ´sit´ the car even more securely on the road, the blade-shaped swage line has a sharper section and both the top and bottom edges rise at the rear, blending into the wheel arch.

"The side window, C-Pillar and tailgate spoiler are of course all new and although the rear screen is steeply raked, rear headroom remains good and the trunk capacity is unchanged. The rear wing panels are pulled in a little (compared with the 5-door) so the rear wheel arches appear to protrude further from the main body - although the overall width is unchanged," comments Guillaume.
"At the rear, the side beltline tracks the outside edge of the all-new jewel-like rear lamp cluster and flows seamlessly into and around the rear bumper which is extended by 5 mm. This flow is echoed by a crisp crease line between the metal edge of the tailgate and the rear screen. This subtle stress line wraps around the inside edge of the light clusters, seeming to push them outwards, making the car look wider. Flow lines are also created by the rear wheel arch and rear bumper with corner ridges that pick-up on the swage lines. Unlike other cee´d models, the exhaust tailpipe on the pro_cee´d is boldly displayed," concludes Guillaume.

Under the guidance of Guillaume, pro_cee´d was styled by a dedicated multinational Kia design team in Germany, assisted by a design team in Korea. Like other members of the family, the third cee´d model is exclusively tailored to meet the requirements of the European C-segment and the tastes of European consumers.

World-class wind tunnel hones pro_cee´d aerodynamics

The final look of the production pro_cee´d was developed from European designs in Kia´s world-class full-size aero-acoustic wind tunnel at the Namyang R&D Centre in Korea. The pro_cee´d has a smooth exterior, with elegant detailing and no unnecessary features, which results in significantly improved aerodynamics.

The 4250 mm long three-door hatchback, which is 15 mm longer than the five-door, with 10 mm greater overhang (875 mm) at the front and 5 mm (725 mm) at the rear, has highly competitive drag and lift coefficients. Its aerodynamic drag figure is Cd 0.33 (same as the cee´d 5-door) - bettering Golf and Focus, while its lift coefficient figure is a class-best result. A low lift coefficient enhances vehicle stability at high speeds.

High-tech, lower-weight body structure

Beneath its stylish exterior, Kia´s new pro_cee´d benefits from a bodyshell that has been engineered to achieve exceptionally high torsional (twisting) stiffness, which delivers a host of benefits in terms of handling, ride quality, durability, refinement and safety.

The all-new bodyshell that Kia has engineered for the pro_cee´d uses a high percentage of high tensile-strength steel (67%) for structurally critical components (to save weight and to increase torsional stiffness), while more than 87% of the bodyshell is made from anti-corrosion steel.

Model-for-model, the new pro_cee´d weighs a significant 84 kg (maximum) less than the equivalent five-door version.

Finite element analysis was performed to conduct simulated crash testing and to arrive at the optimal structural design. Kia´s engineers created a final pro_cee´d bodyshell that surpasses its design goals in terms of resistance to both twisting forces (torsional rigidity) and longitudinal bending forces (flexural rigidity).

To enhance the bodyshell´s ability to resist corrosion, every cee´d is subjected to a new Rotation Dipping Painting method which takes each bodyshell and rotates it through a forward somersault while immersed in the tank, ensuring the optimum coating thickness on every surface, throughout the entire shell.



3. INTERIOR

Deeply impressive quality and craftsmanship

The interior of each member of the Kia cee´d family has been designed and developed to the highest standards to fully demonstrate the brand´s growing ´power to surprise´ and to produce cars which are perfectly in tune with European consumers´ tastes and needs.

Now, eight months after the cee´d 5-door went on sale, Kia´s senior executives and its many dealers know that when customers first step into a cee´d they are going to be deeply impressed by its style, execution, quality, materials, fit and finish.

"There will be several unique aspects to the experience of sitting in the three-door pro_cee´d," enthuses David Labrosse, Manager Product Planning, Kia R&D Centre, Russelsheim. "The shallower windscreen, lower roof lining and wider doors with their slimmer glass house will all create a very special ambience inside this cee´d."

"There will also be numerous features that are carried over from the cee´d family, because they have been proven to work so successfully. pro_cee´d will present customers with closely matched materials, soft-touch surfaces and high quality fabrics, made in Europe, to suit local tastes."

"The pro_cee´d will give consumers multiple choices and enable them to create their own interiors, their own atmosphere and achieve a degree of personalization that is not often possible in the C-segment," concludes Labrosse.

So the successful cee´d five-door interior design that many of that model´s features and attributes are carried-over to the pro_cee´d. Key differences are the lower roofline, larger front doors and redesigned rear seat.

The lower roofline inevitably reduces headroom, but pro_cee´d still offers customers class-competitive interior space, with front headroom of 990 mm and 940 mm of rear headroom. Thanks to the long wheelbase (2650 mm) and generous dimensions from the foot pedals to the rear seat hip-point, interior space in the pro_cee´d will accommodate four large adults, or a family of five, in real comfort.

The larger pro_cee´d front door hinges feature three ´detentes´ (including two intermediate steps at 25 and 50 degrees) - the last position an extra-wide 70 degrees so that the greater angle, combined with the larger door length (1486 mm long compared to 1210 mm long on the 5-door) ensures good access to the rear seats.

This access is aided by new front seats with a handle on top of the backrest which can be used to tilt the backrest forwards and slide the seat forwards in one smooth operation. Both front seats are fitted with a ´memory´ mechanism so that they can be returned to their original position after passengers have boarded or exited the pro_cee´d.

These multi-adjustable front seats have wide cushions and backrests to offer superior support with generous proportions to accommodate drivers and passengers of all shapes and sizes. Adjustable lumbar support is available on both driver and passenger seats.

To boost practicality in the three-door pro_cee´d, Kia´s designers re-styled the rear seat cushion, which is now fixed, and re-engineered the 60/40 split backrest so that it is easy to release and simply folds down onto the cushion with no need to remove the headrestraints. The resulting load floor extension is step-less, but not completely flat, however the car does offer excellent luggage capacity for this class of vehicle - a total of 340 litres with the rear seats upright and 1130 litres with them folded.

Like those found in the cee´d 5-door, the pro_cee´d retains the immensely practical under-floor storage trays in the load area.

Cool styling and numerous choices

The clean, modern, sporty and elegant design theme that characterises the exterior of Kia pro_cee´d is replicated throughout the interior.

The pro_cee´d will present customers with the opportunity to choose between three trim/equipment levels, four interior concepts, four centre stack styles and seven different fabrics - depending on model - just like other cee´d models.

The four interior concepts are Basic, Rainbow (in Blue or Blush), Classic and Sporty. The centre stack can be finished in Black, Silver, Blue or Blush. The interior trim choices include: five fabrics - Grey, Blue, Blush, Classic, Sporty and two leathers, Grey and Black.

Driver-focused cockpit and controls

The pro_cee´d driver will enjoy the feeling of a ´compact and sporty´ cockpit with its shallower windscreen, thick-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel, sporty three-dial instrument cluster beneath a tightly curved cowling and centre stack angled towards the driver.

All the controls are ergonomically designed to place them within easy reach of the driver´s hands and the overall layout has true elegance.

The instrument cluster has a ´high-tech´ appearance, with the large central speedometer flanked by a rev-counter (to the left) and water temperature and fuel gauges to the right. The dial graphics are detailed, precise and clear, while the ´high-tech´ look is enhanced by the use of red-orange illumination for the dials, audio equipment and switch gear.

´Floating´ centre stack feature

The stylish centre stack is a key visual feature of the interior design and can be ordered with one of five different finishes. Designed so that it appears to ´float´ beside the driver, it features a tailor-made RDS audio system, and unusually it is flanked by four large air vents - rather than the more commonly-found two.

The centre stack sweeps down to meet the floor console which houses an oddments tray (with USB, AUX and iPod connections on EX and TX trims), gear selector and hand-brake lever, twin cup-holders and large-capacity storage box.



4. TRIMS & OPTIONS

Generous, top-quality equipment as standard

The new Kia pro_cee´d range will present C-segment customers in Europe with a top quality, generously equipped vehicle as standard, while also offering a wide range of optional equipment.

"The new three-door pro_cee´d greatly extends the multiple-choice equipment policy of Kia firstly introduced with the cee´d five-door, by adding a third body style to the model mix," explained Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President, Kia Motors Europe. "Like its siblings, pro_cee´d will be available with three equipment levels, plus four interior concepts, five interior colour-schemes, 12 exterior colours and a much wider range of optional extras - so that each customer can create a ´personalised´ vehicle to suit their needs and tastes."

Standard equipment on the four LX models will include: front, side and curtain airbags, speed-sensing automatic door locks, head restraints and three-point seat belts for all five occupants, central locking, electric front windows, four-speaker audio system with audio controls on the steering wheel and integrated information cluster with trip computer.

Buyers of the eight EX models will benefit from additional or upgraded equipment including: black bezel headlamps, electric door mirrors, projection front fog lamps, manual air-conditioning, keyless entry and anti-theft alarm, integrated ´active´ head restraints for the front seats plus adjustable lumbar support, centre console with storage and armrest, twin front tweeter speakers, and USB, AUX and iPod connections.

The seven range-topping TX models will feature ESP and BAS, fully automatic air-conditioning, electrically adjustable, heated and folding door mirrors and (optional in some markets), leather pack interior and sports pack. The Sports Pack comprises 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/45 R17 tyres, stiffer dampers, sport-concept interior trim (with ´tyre-track´ pattern fabric and silver stitching, plus alloy pedals and stainless-steel door-scuff plates.

Broad selection of options

Kia expects many pro_cee´d owners will find the options list attractive and will select extra equipment for their cars. Kia will offer a choice of five styles of alloy wheel, 10 metallic exterior colours, solar glass and rain-repellent ´hydrophobic´ glass by Saint-Gobain, powered sunroof with safety sensor, three-stage front seat warmers, integrated Sat-Nav and in-dash 6-CD changer, plus Leather and Sport ´packs´ and a range of ´Rainbow´ and ´Classic´ interior trim choices.

Top-quality audio performance

The Kia cee´d family of cars was the brand´s first to be fitted with a purpose-built, top quality audio entertainment system, specifically tailored to fit the new centre console design. It features RDS and delivers genuine high-performance sounds. Every cee´d car will have audio controls on the steering wheel.

All cee´d family models come with an RDS radio/single CD player with MP3 compatibility and speed rated volume control, and four audio speakers - one in each door. Both the EX and TX models gain two front tweeters for a total of six, plus USB (Universal Serial Bus), AUX and iPod connections in the centre console. The iPod connection lets cee´d owners play their favourite music through the car´s speaker system.

All models are fitted with a roof-mounted antenna and available audio options include an in-dash 6-CD changer and turn-by-turn integrated satellite navigation system with pan-Europe Map-CD supplied by Navtec.


5. PERFORMANCE

Advanced diesel and gasoline powertrains

"With the style and sport oriented pro_cee´d, we are expecting that a larger percentage of customers, up to 20%, will order the 2.0-litre gasoline or diesel model, with manual transmission, with many of them also ordering the 17-inch wheels which come with stiffer dampers as standard. This combination will perfectly match the sporty character the latest cee´d derivative," comments Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer Kia Motors Europe. "As with other cee´d family models, pro_cee´d buyers will be able to select the combination of engine and transmission that most closely matches their lifestyle and motoring habits," concludes Guillaume.

For its new pro_cee´d, Kia is presenting customers the full choice of cee´d family powertrains - five Euro4 compliant engines and three transmissions, as offered in the five-door hatchback and Sporty Wagon models. Top speeds are similar to the five-door hatchback model, ranging from 206-to-172 kph.

Benefiting from a maximum weight reduction of 84 kg across the model range, the pro_cee´d accelerates more rapidly, delivering acceleration times (to 100 kph) from 10.1 to 13.5 seconds - compared to a 10.3 to 13.8 seconds spread for the five-door model.

Power outputs cover a 90 ps to 143 ps range, including the popular, advanced and highly responsive 1.6-litre, 115 ps diesel engine - designed and engineered at Kia´s ´centre of diesel excellence´ within the R&D Centre at Russelsheim, and manufactured by Kia in Slovakia. Fuel consumption figures range over a 4.5 to 7.7 litres/100 km span, while CO2 figures vary between 119 and 184 g/km.

To suit local taxation requirements, some of the pro_cee´d engines will be available in certain markets with lowered maximum power. Good drivability will be largely maintained as the robust torque outputs of these engines are undiminished.

Highly responsive, low consumption diesel

One of the most popular engine choices for pro_cee´d buyers is expected to be the all-new 1.6-litre CRDi 16-valve diesel engine made in Slovakia. This modern DOHC unit features an electrically actuated variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to ensure lively performance and clean emissions. Its power and torque figures are highly competitive - 115 ps (84.6 kW) and 255 Nm. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission as standard with a four-speed automatic available as an option (depending on market).

Diesel pro_cee´d customers demanding higher performance can specify Kia´s Korean-built 2.0-litre CRDi diesel engine. This SOHC 16-valve CRDi unit also features second-generation common-rail technology, plus a VGT to generate 140 ps (103 kW) and 305 Nm of torque. This engine comes with a single transmission choice; a fuel-stretching high top ratio six-speed manual as standard.

As with other cee´d models, a ´lower-power´ version of both diesel engines will be offered in some markets for local taxation reasons. The low 1.6 produces 90 ps (66.2 kW), while the low 2.0 gives 135 ps (99.3 kW) of power.

Choice of three gasoline engines

Kia pro_cee´d customers will also be able to order their car with one of three class-competitive 16-valve gasoline engines (1.4, 1.6 and 2.0-litres) - all fitted with performance-boosting upgraded electronic multi-point fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing (CVVT). All three engines are supplied with a five-speed manual transmission as standard.

The 1.4-litre engine generates a maximum power output of 109 ps (80.2 kW), while the 1.6-litre unit produces 122 ps (89.7 kW). For the ultimate gasoline pro_cee´d performance, Kia´s compact DOHC 1975 cc gasoline engine creates a maximum of 143 ps (105.2 kW).

Smooth-shifting with the optional Automatic

Although the standard transmission on pro_cee´d will be manual, two gasoline models (the 1.6 and 2.0 versions) and one diesel (the 1.6 high-power) will be available with automatic transmission as an extra-cost option, although only a small percentage of overall sales are expected to be automatics.

The pro_cee´d automatic is a four-speed gearbox, which allows fully automatic operation, or manual selection of 3rd and 4th gears (simply by moving the lever left-or-right in the selector gate) and first or second gear when terrain or conditions demand restricting driving to a low ratio.

The automatic features an electronic controller, which monitors a range of parameters, ensuring safe gear changes with excellent shift quality, and also adapts the transmission´s characteristics to suit an individual´s driving style.

6. CHASSIS & RUNNING GEAR

Fine-tuned mechanical components

Like the cee´d five-door hatchback and the Sporty Wagon, the new pro_cee´d is fitted with fully independent, sub-frame-mounted, front and rear suspension systems, engineered by Kia´s chassis specialists in Germany and designed to deliver crisp, responsive handling and a supple, comfortable ride on European roads - even when fully laden.

For the pro_cee´d, spring and damper rates in the MacPherson Strut (front) and ´in-wheel multi-link´ (rear) suspension are fine-tuned to accommodate the three-door derivative´s specific weight - an average of 80 kg less than the five-door, model-for-model across the range.

"The suspension geometry set up and the spring/damper rates we have developed for the cee´d family through extensive testing on European roads, have been well received by both media and customers," commented Michael Lugert, Manager Vehicle Evaluation, Kia R&D Centre. "We have made some small adjustments (compared to the five-door) to ´fine-tune´ the settings for the pro_cee´d on account of its reduced weight and with particular attention focused on the 17-inch alloy wheel model with stiffer dampers and special software for the electric power steering - as we expect this optional variant to be a popular choice."

The MacPherson strut front suspension features a broad-based lower arm and a negative camber angle (0.5 degrees) for greater cornering stability under all conditions. The multi-link rear suspension employs 1.0 degrees of negative camber and is mounted on a compact transverse sub-frame, with the shock absorbers and coil springs mounted separately for improved ride quality and minimal intrusion into the trunk.

The same cee´d family choice of standard 15-inch steel and 16-inch alloy wheels is available for pro_cee´d - all shod exclusively with Michelin tyres. All cee´d derivatives come with a steel space-saver spare wheel - located in the trunk floor well.

Like its sister-cars, the pro_cee´d will also be available with optional 17 x 6.5-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels fitted with wider, lower-profile 225/45 R17 Michelin tyres. The cars equipped with this option also feature stiffer dampers as standard to deliver an even sportier driving experience.

To save fuel and deliver responsive handling in everyday driving, the pro_cee´d also has Kia´s latest MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering) system. This electric power-assisted system has relatively high gearing, with just 2.69 turns of the steering wheel lock-to-lock and is fine-tuned to deliver good ´feel´ under all driving conditions in the three-door cee´d. Models fitted with the optional 17-inch wheels are geared for 2.58 turns of the steering wheel lock-to-lock. Kia´s MDPS system in the pro_cee´d gives a fuel saving of 3% compared to conventional hydraulic assistance.

7. SAFETY

Six airbags as standard, boost pro_cee´d safety

While developing the three-door pro_cee´d, Kia´s engineers worked hard to ensure that the new cee´d model is one of the safest cars in the C-segment. It has the highest levels of active and passive safety, to fully satisfy the ever-increasing consumer expectations of modern car design.

Active safety includes ESP availability

Every member of the cee´d family is fully equipped to avoid potential accident situations and handle the hazards of everyday motoring. Proven technology in accident avoidance is ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and every pro_cee´d TX model will feature this system as standard. Buyers of both LX and EX models will be able to order ESP as an option. This system comes together with TCS (all-speed Traction Control System) and BAS (emergency Brake Assistance System). ESP is fully automatic and operates at all times, while offering a multitude of benefits. It improves stability under heavy braking, restores directional control during a potential skid, enhances grip in wet and icy conditions, and ensures superior traction during hard acceleration.

Like every member of the cee´d family, all pro_cee´d models will have a powerful all-disc braking system featuring ABS anti-lock with EBD electronic brake force distribution. This system brings the pro_cee´d to a complete stop in 39.5 metres from a speed of 100 kph - matching the very best braking performance in the C-segment.

Additional ´active safety´ options

Three available options will boost active safety even further for the pro_cee´d owners. Innovative ´hydrophobic´ glass will be an option for all door glass. Coated with a water repellent film, the hydrophobic glass enhances safety by encouraging rain to flow away quickly, leaving the driver with greatly improved visibility. The pro_cee´d´s rear parking assist system, has four sensors and is also available as an option on EX and TX models. It enhances safety during low-speed parking manoeuvres by alerting the driver to an obstruction with an audible alarm while reversing.
A TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) will trigger an instrument cluster display indicating if a tyre has low pressure or is punctured.

Maximum ´passive safety´ for maximum protection

If a collision is unavoidable, new Kia pro_cee´d is engineered to safeguard the occupants with a range of passive safety measures as standard - starting with a robust bodyshell.

State-of-the-art computer-aided design was employed by Kia engineers, together with ´closed loop´ engineering techniques, to create the pro_cee´d three-door bodyshell structure that matches the cee´d 5-door and the Sporty Wagon for strength. Featuring high-strength steel in key areas, the bodyshell is designed to offer occupants good protection in front, side, rear and roll-over accidents. Every pro_cee´d model will be equipped as standard with an integrated Safety Restraint System (SRS) consisting of dual front airbags, front side airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and belt load-limiters. In addition, pro_cee´d features full-length curtain airbags, protecting the occupants in both seat rows.

All the safety systems work together to provide full passenger protection. If an impact is detected, a signal is relayed to all the airbags and to the seatbelt pretensioners, activating them if appropriate. The passenger side front airbag features an on-off switch so it can be deactivated if small children in a safety-seat occupy that position in the car.

On both EX and TX models, both front seats are equipped with an integrated ´active´ head restraint as standard. This head restraint moves forwards and upwards during a rear impact collision to protect the seat occupant from whiplash injuries. The system is available on LX models as an option. All pro_cee´d models will be fitted with two ISOFIX anchor points and Top Tether anchorages in the outside positions of the rear seat for the attachment of appropriate child safety seats and restraints.

Security and peace of mind

Vehicle security is important for personal safety and each new pro_cee´d is comprehensively equipped to deter and resist thieves. Central locking is standard on all models, with speed-sensing automatic locking. Keyless entry and an anti-theft alarm and dash-top security lamp are standard on EX and TX models.
Every pro_cee´d engine is fitted with an advanced electronic immobiliser that was developed in tandem with Thatcham Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre in the UK, and targets a top-level anti-theft protection rating. Every model has a ´battery saver´ to preventing draining of the battery.


8. MARKETING

Maximising customer choice with a third cee´d model

Two core themes behind the introduction of the Kia cee´d five-door hatchback and Sporty Wagon are continued and further developed with the launch of the Kia pro_cee´d - maximum customer choice and product sensuality.

"The introduction of the three-door model is in itself a major boost to maximising Kia customer choice," explains Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President Kia Motors Europe. "pro_cee´d is expected to appeal to consumers who would not consider buying a five-door hatchback, and until the availability of this new model would never have entertained the idea of buying a Kia.

"With pro_cee´d we are anticipating Germany, Spain and the UK to generate the highest demand, closely followed by Italy and France. In terms of model mix, the 1.6-litre versions (gasoline and diesel) are expected to be the biggest sellers (about one third), but demand for the 2-litre models and for the 17-inch wheel and stiffer suspension option is predicted to rise to around 20%," observes Lievens.

Buyers of the new pro_cee´d will be offered the full range of features available on other cee´d family members. Choices include: five engines, three trim/equipment levels, four interior concepts, four interior centre-stack styles, seven different trim fabrics and 12 exterior colours. pro_cee´d will be made in both left- and right-hand drive, so Kia can respond to individual customer´s personal tastes across the whole of Europe and build vehicles to meet their specific requirements.

Targeting the latest cee´d model at a specific group of consumers, Kia´s design teams have created the pro_cee´d to ´satisfy all senses´. Adapting the cee´d core theme of sensuality, the designers were determined that pro_cee´d will be especially attractive to see, nice to touch and even greater fun to drive.

High-performance entertainment

Ensuring that pro-cee´d will be great fun to ride in, as well as to drive, as standard, all three-door models (LX, EX and TX) come with a purpose-built RDS radio/single CD player, with MP3 compatibility, and four audio speakers, plus audio controls on the steering wheel.

Both the EX and TX models will have USB and AUX iPod®* connections in the centre console, so pro_cee´d owners can play their favourite music through the car´s speakers.

Revolutionary Kia 7-Year Warranty

In Europe, the new Kia pro_cee´d will come with the same extended warranty package as the five-door hatchback and the Sporty Wagon of cee´d models. In fact, every Kia in the cee´d family marketed by Kia Motors Europe will benefit from a 7-year/150,000 kilometre new car warranty. The ´best´ new vehicle warranty ever offered in Europe, the Kia warranty will be free and transferable to subsequent owners.

Thanks to the high quality of vehicles coming from Kia´s brand-new facility in Slovakia, Kia is demonstrating its commitment to maximum customer satisfaction and lowered costs of vehicle ownership, by offering this revolutionary warranty. Three models boost Kia sales in Europe

"When we launched the Kia cee´d hatchback we knew it was going to be Kia´s best-ever challenger for C-segment honours in the European marketplace," asserts Jean-Charles Lievens. "After the first press drives in late 2006, media reaction was overwhelmingly positive and even before the cee´d five-door hatchback went on sale in January 2007, we had more than 17,000 pre-orders for our new model."

Since that first launch of cee´d, five-door orders have passed the 70,000 mark and pre-orders for the new Sporty Wagon model (on sale from September in most countries) are very strong, approaching 10,000 units.
